If you are registered for The Breakup Tri 2018 then let me be the first to say congratulations for joining us on this new adventure and we look forward to hearing your feedback about the race once you have recovered. If for some reason you are registered but are not able to complete please notify the Arctic Tri team at Thebreakuptri@hotmail.com or leave us a message on our Facebook page. If you choose not to race or something comes up your registration fee is non-refundable and your spot will be given to the first person on the wait list. You will have until May 4th to notify the team but, if you know beforehand please let us know. At bib pickup, May 4th from 5:30pm-7pm at the UAF Patty Center, you will need a photo ID and will need to sign a waiver and pay for your one day USAT membership if your are not already a USAT member (Cash or Check only). If you are a USAT member you will need to show proof of that as well. If you cannot make it to bib pick-up please contact email@example.com so we can make arrangements for you. Those on the wait list will be notified as soon as possible if an opening occurs. Tyson and I appreciate all of the support that we have gotten for this race and look forward to the start of a great racing season.
On race day, the transition area opens at 10 am and closes at 11:30 am. All racers, spectators and others – except race officials – must clear this area at 11:30 am. Transition area will remain closed until all athletes have completed the race.
The pre-race meeting will be at 11:30 am on the pool deck
Check-in must be completed no later than 30 minutes prior to race start; those arriving after this time will not be allowed to participate.
There will be 3 heats for the swim and it’s based on the 500 yard predicted swim time. The first wave will start at 12pm and consist of 6 women/ 6 men who will swim 2 per lane. The second heat will consist of 12 swimmers as well. The subsequent heats will begin at the completion of the preceding heat and consist of 18 swimmers. Between each heat there will be a 2 min warm-up.
We will be circle swimming for this event which means you are always swimming on the right side of the lane swim. If you are going to pass, tap the foot of the swimmer in front of you to notify them of a pass. We have several first time triathletes in this event so please avoid swimming over the top of other people and pass with care. Each swimmer will be sent of at 5 sec intervals.
We will have volunteers on the swim deck to assist but, you will be responsible for counting your own laps so please be honest. For those of you who don’t know or can’t remember;
500yds= 20 lengths, 10 laps,
1 length= 25yds (4x25=100 yds.)
The locker rooms will be open so you can change into your bike clothes if you wish before heading out. Watch yourself on the pool deck since it will be slick and be aware you will be running onto concrete to get to the transition site. If you use the locker rooms to change your clothes make sure you exit once you are finished through the external pool door and not through the Patty building. This will help to make sure no one slips on the tile in the Patty center and gives everyone the same exit point.
Bike racks will be numbered so please rack your bike in your designated location. Please be courteous to those around you and only use your designated area. The transition area will be in the Patty Center parking lot which will have some gravel so watch your bare feet. You will be able to run through the transition area with your bike but you CAN NOT ride through the transition area. Before mounting your bike you must be outside of the transition zone (it will be marked) and your helmet MUST be fastened.
Make sure you always ride on the right hand side of the road and stay as far to the right of the white line as possible. There is no drafting allowed during the race which means you will need to keep a minimum distance of 7yards between you and next rider however, exceptions are made for entering and exiting the transition area and when passing. The rider making a pass needs to do so in a timely fashion and the passed rider needs to pull back a minimum distance of 3 bike lengths.
Once you have completed the bike please place it back on the rack in your designated location and proceed to the run. You will need to stay on the sidewalk until you reach the round about where you will then cross the road and run on the left hand side of the road, running into traffic, for the remainder of the run course. Please pass with care and be aware of your surroundings and watch for cars! The course will be marked and have one aid station and have volunteers at all major intersections.
The finish will be located in the Patty Center Parking lot next to the transition area. Please continue all the way through the finish line.
There will be volunteers throughout the course so if you are having trouble or see someone having trouble please notify them so they can get the help they need. If you are uncomfortable during the swim the swim feel free to stop at either end of the lane or use the wall or lane lines until you are ready to go again. There will be 2 lifeguards present at all times. Watch your step when leaving the pool and there is no running on the pool deck or in the locker rooms. If you choose to run on the concrete please be aware of possible rocks and other hazard. Again, your helmet must be fastened before you can mount your bike.
MP3, phones, IPods, will NOT be allowed during the race so please leave them in the car.
Watch for any emergency vehicles and be prepared to stop if they need to cross in front of you. If you have an accident, or if EMS is called for you, they will evaluate the situation and advise whether or not to let you continue racing. Treatment of minor injuries at the transition area; ice will also be available at the transition area.
