About the Bike Course
Since it is relatively short, a sprint triathlon can be a great first experience. And any type of bike -- mountain, cyclocross, road, tri, etc. -- is welcome. Just come out and have fun!
Bike racks will be available. Rack your bike in any spot you like. Please be courteous to those around you and keep your space tidy and compact. The transition area will be in the grassy field by the Patty Center parking lot which may have some gravel so watch those bare feet. You will be able to run through the transition area with your bike but you CANNOT ride through the transition area. Before mounting your bike, you must be outside of the marked transition zone and your helmet MUST be fastened.
Your bike time will start once you exit the transition area and will end once you transition to the run.
Upon leaving transition, turn right out of the UAF Patty Center parking lot. You will proceed down Tanana Loop Drive to the roundabout. Observing the rules of the road, you will enter the roundabout and exit on Sheep Creek Road. Continue on Sheep Creek until just past Murphy Dome Road. There will be a turnaround sign. Make a U turn and return to the Patty Center.
Be sure to always ride on the right side of the road and stay as far right of the white line as possible. Drafting is not allowed which means you need to keep a minimum distance of seven yards, or three bike lengths, between you and next rider, however, exceptions are made for entering and exiting the transition area and when passing. The rider making a pass needs to do so within 15 seconds and the passed rider needs to pull back a minimum distance of 3 bike lengths.
Course marshals will direct you where to go and to make sure you are being safe on the road. You must obey all traffic laws. Traffic will not be stopped. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings and remember that there are cars on the road.
Not sure where you're going? Good news. See the map on our website. And an optional bike course preview is available on Saturday, April 27. Meet at the Patty Center; we will depart promptly at 11 am for a leisurely 13.1 mile ride.
