About the Swim
The 500 yard swim will be at the UAF Patty Center pool. Those waiting to start their swim should wait, approximately in bib order, at the deep end to be called to an available lane. It will take about an hour for everyone to start the swim.
The first heat of 12 swimmers will start at 12 pm. The remaining swimmers will start one at a time, maximum two per lane, as lanes from the previous heat are cleared. After the first heat, each person will be allowed to enter their swim lane for a moment and tell the timer when they are ready to start. The timer will start the person at the next full minute start (for example, 12:15:00 pm). Your swim time will end as you exit the pool, but the race clock will continue to run for your overall time.
The pool depth ranges from 3.5 feet to 10 feet and will be divided by lane lines. We will have a timer/lap counter for each lane but be prepared to count your own laps. If you prefer to swim next to the wall, just let us know. You are also allowed to stop and briefly hold onto a lane line or the wall if needed. We have one lifeguard on deck.
1 length = 25 yards
2 lengths = 1 lap = 50 yards
500 yards = 10 laps
The locker rooms will be open and available before, during, and after the race to store gear, change into bike clothes if you wish, and shower afterward. Access is from the pool deck or hallway. (Many people wear their bike clothes to swim -- or swim, bike, and run all in just a swim suit.) Be careful on the slippery pool deck.
Whether or not you enter the showers/locker rooms after your swim, everyone will exit through the pool deck emergency exit door (propped open), continue up the ramp and into the Patty parking lot to the transition area. The surface is concrete and asphalt so be prepared to run/jog/walk barefoot on those surfaces. Please use caution and prevent slips/trips/falls on the wet ground.
All transition materials (towels, shoes, etc.) must remain either in the locker room showers or with your bike to eliminate congestion around the pool area.
